Are You Being Bugged Yet?
Talking Gardening with Doug
With warmer days come the crop of buggy pests on our plants and flowers.  It is frustrating to watch plants we’ve struggled so hard to get going get attacked by insects or suffer from fungal diseases. This past couple of weeks I have lost count of how many customers have come in with plant samples showing symptoms of insect or disease damage. The big question is ‘how do we tell what’s eating our plants?”  Basically, there are 3 main types of bad bugs – CHEWING, RASPING, AND SUCKING. Each type of insect causes different damages to the plant.  Learn more about insect damage

Extend Your Bloom Time
Plants will go to seed once their blooms are finished. That's nature.  If left alone a flowering plant would bloom, that bloom would then be fertilized and set seed.  In this reproductive cycle the plant expends all its energy and nutrients to set seed instead of producing more flowers.  But a trick called “deadheading” will stop the plant from setting seed too soon. Remove the faded flowers from the plant by pinching off the flower head. Now the plant will spend its energy producing more flowers instead of seed! Deadheading will not only encourage many more flowers it will create a longer blooming period.  Learn more about deadheading

Vegetable Garden Diseases

Bonnie's Garden

Our garden vegetables are prone to certain diseases.  Our best defense is knowledge and good cultural practices. For descriptions of some of the more common garden diseases and tips to remedy them, click here.

Tropicals
As the summer arrives, consider adding some tropical plants to your garden for a splash of color. The large, waving foliage and lush growth habits add a cool, inviting touch, and the plants themselves are naturally tolerant of the heat and humidity of summer. You should treat these as an annual in our area, but at the end of summer you can bring potted tropical into a very bright area of the house.  Here are a couple of great choices for Summer Tropicals

Pollinators
Somewhere between 75% and 95% of all flowering plants on the earth need help with pollination – they need pollinators.  Birds, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, wasps, small mammals, and most  importantly, bees are pollinators. They visit flowers to drink nectar or feed off  of pollen and  transport pollen grains as they move from spot to spot. Learn more
