| June Gardening Tasks Talking Gardening with Doug Before we get into June I want to do a little re-capping of the weather we had in May. Most importantly, our rainfall was a little above average. I find rainfall totals to be one of the more important factors for gardening. Now that we are entering the hotter summer months it is good to know that our plants do not have to stress over the lack of water. And, we do not have to worry about any water restrictions – at least not now. But, as we do enter the summer months, let’s all be water-wise and not be irresponsible citizens and be wasteful of this precious and needed resource. Here are a few June tasks | |

Daylilies Daylilies are one of the most versatile perennials for the landscape. They are very drought tolerant once established and can handle the scorching full sun in the summer and survive our cold winters as well. By removing the dead flowers and cutting back the scapes on your daylilies you will promote new growth and new blooms throughout the season. We have many colors to choose from in large 4-quart pots. Here is just a small sampling of the daylily varieties and colors available at the Meadows Farms. | |

| Extend Your Bloom Time Plants will go to seed once their blooms are finished. That's nature. If left alone a flowering plant would bloom, that bloom would then be fertilized and set seed. In this reproductive cycle the plant expends all its energy and nutrients to set seed instead of producing more flowers. But a trick called “deadheading” will stop the plant from setting seed too soon. Remove the faded flowers from the plant by pinching off the flower head. Now the plant will spend its energy producing more flowers instead of seed! Deadheading will not only encourage many more flowers it will create a longer blooming period. Pollinators Somewhere between 75% and 95% of all flowering plants on the earth need help with pollination – they need pollinators. Birds, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, wasps, small mammals, and most importantly, bees are pollinators.
