Stores Opening at Noon
Summer is here again, and that means it is time for another round of summer inventories. Beginning on Friday, June 21st, our nurseries will begin a rotating schedule of closings so that our staff can complete their inventories in the most accurate way possible. However, unlike in previous years, our stores will not close for the entire day. We will open at 12 noon on those days for your shopping convenience. Please refer to the table below to see which day your local Meadows Farms is closed in the morning so you can plan your shopping day accordingly.

June Gardening Tasks
Talking Gardening with Doug
Before we get into June I want to do a little re-capping of the weather we had in May.  Most importantly, our rainfall was a little above average.  I find rainfall totals to be one of the more important factors for gardening.  Now that we are entering the hotter summer months it is good to know that our plants do not have to stress over the lack of water.  And, we do not have to worry about any water restrictions – at least not now.  But, as we do enter the summer months, let’s all be water-wise and not be irresponsible citizens and be wasteful of this precious and needed resource.  Here are a few June tasks

Squash & Zucchini
Zucchini, crookneck, and straightneck summer squashes are best when harvested at a small size, about 6 inches long. Pattypan or scallop squashes are best when they are 3 inches in diameter. Check plants daily because the squashes grow quickly in warm weather. If some escape detection, harvest them as soon as possible. The more you harvest, the more the plants will bear.  Learn more

Stop Garden Problems with
8 Simple Actions
Bonnie's Garden
There are a lot of pests and diseases—even nutrient deficiencies–just waiting to pounce on our vegetables/flowers/trees/shrubs. It can be overwhelming to know what to do. So here are some things to keep in mind.  See Bonnie's
8 Simple Actions.  To help in identifying your problem check my last two blogs—a week before last on vegetable garden diseases and last week on
insect pests.  Or bring us a sample and let us help you identify and treat it.

Container Gardening
Container gardening is all about having the right mix… The right mix of plants, the right mix of water & sunlight, the right mix of container variation and, not to be overlooked, the right planting mix!  Using a planting mix specifically made for containers is better than using a garden soil or general soil.  Potting mixes are formulated with specific ingredients that help plants thrive in their contained environment.  Learn more

Perennial Flowers
Meadows Farms carries over a thousand varieties of perennials for your garden and landscape. All of these varieties are tested for our region of Virginia and Maryland to survive the cold winters. Perennials add great color and texture to every yard and because they are herbaceous they will return year after year.

Organic Lawn Care Tips
The first step to converting to organic practices with lawn care is creating a healthy lawn soil.  Without healthy soil, grass has a harder time growing and staying healthy. We need to start adding organic matter to the lawn.  How do start to create a more organic lawn?  Read Doug's tips for creating an organic lawn here.

Summertime Watering Tips
Summer time is here and many homeowners like to water their lawns to keep the grass green.  Here are some tips to follow for effective and efficient watering.  See our tips for watering lawns, trees and shrubs.
