Hear Yea, Hear Yea!
Hydrangeas Are Blooming
Talking Gardening with Doug
Many customers have recently come into the garden center so excited that their blue hydrangeas are in bud and bloom for the first time in two or three years. This past couple of years so many customers were wondering why and if they did something wrong. Rest assured that in most cases it is nothing that we have done wrong. The fault may well lie with heavy and late snows, as well as frigid temperatures.  Let me explain in greater detail so that you can understand what had happened to hydrangeas

Echinacea (Cone Flower)
For generations, cone flowers were only available in one, single color: a pale pink. Through research and cross breeding, there are now dozens of varieties available to the gardener, from pinks and whites to yellows, red, and multi-color varieties. Cone flowers are also great plants to attract pollinators to your gardens, as bees, butterflies, and birds love hanging around the large blooms. Finally, a single cone flower can provide a summer season’s worth of color that will remain year after year.  Take a look at a sampling of varieties of echinacea that we carry.

Fun Gardening Facts
Bonnie's Garden
I’ve enjoyed writing blogs for The Great Big Greenhouse for the past few years. One of the things I’ve enjoyed most is learning new and interesting facts. I thought I’d share with you

Tropicals
As the summer arrives, consider adding some tropical plants to your garden for a splash of color. The large, waving foliage and lush growth habits add a cool, inviting touch, and the plants themselves are naturally tolerant of the heat and humidity of summer. You should treat these as an annual in our area, but at the end of summer you can bring potted tropical into a very bright area of the house.  Here are a couple of great choices for Summer Tropicals

Pollinators
Somewhere between 75% and 95% of all flowering plants on the earth need help with pollination – they need pollinators.  Birds, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, wasps, small mammals, and most  importantly, bees are pollinators. They visit flowers to drink nectar or feed off  of pollen and  transport pollen grains as they move from spot to spot. Learn more

Locally Grown Vegetables
Jim Meadows (nephew of the Farmer) found his true calling in the late 1980's when he realized our retail stores needed to carry some larger tomatoes to satisfy our customers needs. Now he supplies all locations with a full line of not only hybrid and heirloom tomatoes, but all the vegetable varieties that a garden would need.  Read more

Re-blooming Encore Azaleas
People who adore spring-blooming azaleas can now enjoy an explosion of colors season after season with the Encore Azalea. Each of the many Encore varieties begins their performance with the spring flowering season. Once this “first act” of blooming concludes, new shoots begin to grow and set new buds. The Encore Azalea’s “second act” opens when these buds begin blooming into full color during the summer. This unique bloom season continues through the fall, with the curtain dropping with the onset of colder weather. This is followed by the show beginning anew in the spring.
