 | Garden Nuggets - Crapemyrtles in most of the area are now showing new growth. Tips of branches that do not show growth can now be pruned. This will not effect this year's flowers. - A few varieties of crapemyrtle are leafing out late. It is clear that the combination of excess winter moisture and a short period where temperatures dropped near zero has caused an inordinate amount of damage. Crapemyrtles and a few other trees with bark that is green when scratched are unlikely to revive if they are not showing growth by now. - May is ideal for planting most trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals. The threat of damaging cold is past, and currently soil moisture is excellent for planting. - Many plants will not tolerate constantly wet soils, and with recent deluges there is the possibility of continuing damp conditions continuing from last year. Trees such as dogwoods and redbuds require well drained soils, and flowering cherries must be planted in dry ground. Laurels such as Otto Luyken and Schip will not tolerate regular dampness. | |

| Time off for good behavior At long last, the stone block wall that retains the low end of the koi pond has been repaired, with only a single finger smashed in the process of lifting heavy stones while holding back a branch of the wide spreading Acrocona spruce that hid the partially collapsed wall. Ever helpful, my wife suggests that there are “people” who can help with such tasks, then offers her assistance, after all stones have been reset. She comments (again) that this is work for younger folks, and I agree, but I’m not quite ready to admit I can’t do whatever’s necessary. There is little rush necessary in getting around to many of the garden’s tasks, and by good fortune the wall did not collapse further and drain the pond. Some calculation was made in midwinter that the repair could be delayed until temperatures were more hospitable, though mud and high humidity today ....... | |
