Butterfly Gardening
Garden Time with Doug
PLANTS FOR GOOD NECTAR SOURCES.  Summer will be here before we know, and it’s that time of year when butterflies begin to visit our gardens to feed and help pollinate our plants. Matter of fact, I am seeing quite a few butterflies in the nursery enjoying all the blooming perennials and annuals right now. We often plant brightly-colored, nectar-rich plants to attract adult butterflies to our gardens, but it is important not to forget that their young need a safe place to feed as well.  Here is a list of just a few plant suggestions – you can say “Doug’s favorites” – to support our beautiful butterflies.

Peonies
The perennial Peony bears attractive glossy green foliage that typically grows to about 3’ in height with a similar spread, but their popularity is due mainly to their flowers. The striking peony flowers are highly fragrant with massive double blooms usually pink, red or white. Peony plants bloom in late spring or early summer.  Read more about Peonies

Peppers-
From Mild & Sweet to Killer Heat
Bonnie's Garden
There are so many peppers to choose from that it can be overwhelming to pick one. What are the differences?  Sweet peppers have a nice earthy flavor but no heat. Traditionally called green peppers or bell peppers, they usually mature to a totally different color. Green pepper is basically an unripe bell pepper.  If you want a green pepper, pick it while it’s green.  If allowed to stay on the plant long enough, the pepper will ripen to its mature color, usually red, yellow, orange or purple. This usually increases the sugar content.  Hot peppers or chili peppers are rated on what is called the Scoville Heat Scale (Scoville Heat Units). This measures the amount of capsaicin in the pepper—capsaicin is what makes a pepper hot.  The higher the number, the hotter the pepper. The seeds and white membranes inside the pepper contain the most heat. If you remove those, you can tone it down a little.  If you’re shopping for peppers, here is a guide to some of the peppers we most often carry. Scoville Heat Units (SHU) are listed after each variety.... Read more

Tomatoes
Bonnie's Garden
Tomatoes are native to the Americas, like peppers, and were grown by the Aztecs who called the fruits “tomatl”—meaning “plump thing with navel.” Tomatoes are botanically berries, believe it or not!  So which one is the best? Well, I can only tell you my favorites because there are tiny nuances of flavor that some may prefer over another. My advice is to try one new variety every year. That’s how you find your favorite—that’s how I found mine.  And to help you find yours, here is a list of the tomatoes we’ll be carrying this season... Read more

Pollinators
Somewhere between 75% and 95% of all flowering plants on the earth need help with pollination – they need pollinators.  Birds, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, wasps, small mammals, and most  importantly, bees are pollinators. They visit flowers to drink nectar or feed off  of pollen and  transport pollen grains as they move from spot to spot. Learn more
