April Gardening Tasks
Finally, April has arrived. March ended on a high note with warming temperatures and some rain on the last day.  As of March 26, our soil temperature is sitting at 46 degrees. This is an important number to keep in mind as we start gardening in April. This number is telling me that it is still too early to be thinking about planting cold-sensitive plants such as tomatoes, peppers, basil, and many flowering summer annual bedding plants. My advice – we need to patient and let Mother Nature warm us up and that time will be coming soon.  Here are a few April Gardening Tips

Bagged Mulch or Bulk Mulch?
Which one is right for me?
Simply put, the decision to buy bulk or bagged mulch depends on price vs. convenience!  In general, bulk mulch will cost a bit less.  For the extra little bit of money, you will pay for bags, you have something that is a little easier to work with.  Either way, we’re confident that you’ll be pleased with the product!  Learn more about your mulch options and check out our Mulch Calculator to determine how much mulch you'll need for your job.

Creeping Phlox
A perennial ground cover, creeping phlox spreads to display a thick blanket of blooms in vibrant shades of pink, lavender, red, white or bluish-purple every spring. It is a sturdy, low-maintenance plant that camouflages an unsightly slope or other difficult areas in the landscape as it rambles between rocks or cascades over a wall. It can also be planted along a walkway or bordering a flowerbed. Once established, creeping phlox is a drought-tolerant plant that requires supplemental water only during warm, dry weather.  Learn more about Creeping Phlox

Dianthus
There is nothing quite like the classic look of a perennial dianthus plant. Their bluish-grey, grass-like foliage is particularly showy throughout the growing season, and different varieties have different foliage growth habits, from mounding to slightly trailing. Their small, carnation-like blooms cover the plant throughout the spring and early summer. Colors range from whites and pinks all the way to deep lilacs and reds, with many varieties mixing several colors for stunning combinations. Take a look at a sampling of some of the Dianthus varieties we carry.

Shade Loving Caladiums
Bonnie's Garden
I have a raised bed at the front of my yard, just in front of a large maple tree. I used to grow impatiens there.  After a few summers dealing with wilted impatiens, I decided there had to be a better choice. I tried Caladiums instead. Wow! Why hadn’t I tried them before? The colors were gorgeous and they not only thrived in that dry shady bed but I only had to water them once or twice a week—not twice a day.  Read more about Caladiums.

Top 5 Houseplants That Are Safe For Pets
In my time in the nursery, I’ve spoken to many people who never attempted growing houseplants in their homes and offices. Unfortunately, one of the recurring reasons I kept hearing–they owned pets, and so many houseplants are toxic to animals. While it is true that that are many houseplant varieties that can cause toxic effects to pets, there are just as many varieties that are perfectly safe if your pets happen to take a little nibble.

Mulching Soon?
Preen season-long weed control
Preen garden weed preventer stops weeds when they're seeds and prevents them from germinating in flower and vegetable gardens, in ground covers and around trees and shrubs.  By preventing new weeds from sprouting, you eliminate the need for difficult and time-consuming hand-weeding.  Without weeds, your valuable plants can grow larger and stronger.  Early spring is the optimal time to apply Preen.  One application blocks weeds for up to 3 months so your beds will stay neat and weed-free all season long!  Why pull or kill weeds when you can prevent weeds with Preen?  Here's a short video on getting the jump on weeds

Corn Gluten Weed Preventer
It's Organic!
Don’t worry, it’s not the food ingredient everyone’s trying to avoid! In this case, “Gluten Free” is NOT the goal! Corn Gluten is an all-natural by-product of the production of corn starch. It prevents the establishment of weeds and supplies a source of organic nitrogen. Nitrogen promotes green growth in lawns and the nitrogen in corn gluten is slow released and long-lasting.  Corn gluten prevents the roots of seedling weeds from developing. Without root formation, the weed dies from a lack of water since roots deliver water to the rest of the weed. Meadows Farms recommends Espoma Organic Weed Preventer plus Lawn Food.  Learn more about Corn Gluten Weed Preventer
