| Garden Nuggets - Many of the area's popular blue mophead hydrangeas have suffered stem dieback from the winter cold. This is common in recent years, and experience suggests that with new growth the shrub will attain nearly its original size, but the first late spring flowers will be lost. Recent hydrangea introductions such as Endless Summer are remontant, flowering on last years' stems, but also on this years' new growth. So, flowers will be late, but there will be blooms by very late spring or early summer. - Dead stems of hydrangeas should be cut back to the first live leaves. This can be done by pruning individual stems, or with hedge shears. Pruning a few live leaves won't hurt a thing. In several weeks bare stems will be covered by new growth. - Oakleaf hydrangeas and summer flowering hydrangea paniculata varieties such as Limelight rarely suffer winter injury in our area, so pruning is unlikely to be necessary unless the purpose is reducing the size or shaping. Now is the time for this pruning. - April is an ideal time to plant deciduous and evergreen plants, and by mid month the threat of frost is usually past so it's safe to plant more tender annual flowers. - Don't be worried that your crapemyrtle hasn't shown signs of life. Often, the first leaves are not seen until the end of April, or even May. The short period of cold we experienced this winter is unlikely to have damaged any but the most recently planted crapemyrtles. | |

Ramblin' through Dave's garden blog |
| Finally, this is spring I must be getting old, or at least more crotchety (is that possible?). Finally, spring has arrived, and though the threat of chilly temperatures continues, I'm betting (and hopeful) that the worst of it is over. All winters seem to drag on, but this one seemed to last forever (regardless that it was not severe), though again I expect this is more me than the weather. The last of perennials and ephemerals (Trilliums, left) are now popping above ground. A few are missing, even when I delicately excavate to try to find subterranean growth. Squirrels perhaps (convenient culprits), but still I'll wait another week before considering something else to plug into these small gaps. Mostly, I am disappointed about spending good money for tiny mail order plants that never make an appearance, and this is why I prefer plants from the garden center with more established roots. But, some out of the ordinary plants can't be found except through mail order, so I'll whine about it, but continue to plant as always. | |
