| Garden Nuggets - Many of the area's popular blue mophead hydrangeas have suffered stem dieback from the winter cold. This is common in recent years, and experience suggests that with new growth the shrub will attain nearly its original size, but the first late spring flowers will be lost. Recent hydrangea introductions such as Endless Summer are remontant, flowering on last years' stems, but also on this years' new growth. So, flowers will be late, but there will be blooms by very late spring or early summer. - Dead stems of hydrangeas should be cut back to the first live leaves. This can be done by pruning individual stems, or with hedge shears. Pruning a few live leaves won't hurt a thing. In several weeks bare stems will be covered by new growth. - Oakleaf hydrangeas and summer flowering hydrangea paniculata varieties such as Limelight rarely suffer winter injury in our area, so pruning is unlikely to be necessary unless the purpose is reducing the size or shaping. Now is the time for this pruning. - April is an ideal time to plant deciduous and evergreen plants, and by mid month the threat of frost is usually past so it's safe to plant more tender annual flowers. - Reduced rainfall in recent weeks has drier out many saturated lawn and landscapes. Still, many trees and shrubs suffered in last years' excessive rainfall, and it is likely that some will not have survived. Most trees and shrubs begin to leaf out in April, so damage should soon be apparent. - Don't be worried that your crapemyrtle hasn't shown signs of life. Often, the first leaves are not seen until the end of April, or even May. The short period of cold we experienced this winter is unlikely to have damaged any but the most recently planted crapemyrtles. | |

Ramblin' through Dave's garden blog |
| An early spring update As early spring progresses and I am more regularly out in the garden, it is clear that the cursory clean up of the garden was inadequate. Yes, the clearing of piles of leaves brought hellebore blooms into full view, but the current sloppiness is hardly acceptable. Additional raking is necessary, or perhaps the rapid decay that follows spring rains and warming temperatures will beat me to complete the task. There is little doubt that the insulating and moisture retaining benefit of a covering of leaves also moderates the warming of the soil, thus delaying growth of Solomon's Seals that now barely poke through the soil, but not through several inches of leaves. I can hardly complain, but these few seventy degree days make one anxious for all of the spring garden to arrive at once. | |
