Garden Nuggets

- We are now seeing trees and shrubs not leafing in areas that remained wet for months in last year's record rainfall. Some will still show green wood, indicating they are still alive, but branch tips are usually dead and there are no signs of leaves. If suddenly we go from wet to dry, perhaps there's a chance these will survive, but that seems unlikely.

- If the grade in the soggy area has changed so that it might remain damp, it could be best to change to a more moisture tolerant tree or shrub. But, even though rainfall is up year to date, it is unlikely that we'll see a second very rainy year, so there is the likelihood that changes are not necessary.

- We are also seeing trees and shrubs that were stressed by damp areas, and then were killed by a day or two of temperatures that were slightly above or below zero in the winter

- Damage to Mophead hydrangeas that suffered stem dieback from the winter cold is now evident. This is common in recent years, and experience suggests that with new growth the shrub will attain nearly its original size, but the first late spring flowers will be lost. Recent hydrangea introductions such as Endless Summer are remontant, flowering on last years' stems, but also on this years' new growth. So, flowers will be late, but there will be blooms by very late spring or early summer.

- Dead stems of hydrangeas should be cut back to the first live leaves. This can be done by pruning individual stems, or with hedge shears. Pruning a few live leaves won't hurt a thing. In several weeks bare stems will be covered by new growth.

- Oakleaf hydrangeas and summer flowering hydrangea paniculata varieties such as Limelight rarely suffer winter injury in our area, so pruning is unlikely to be necessary unless the purpose is reducing the size or shaping. Now is the time for this pruning.

- April and May are ideal for planting most trees, shrubs, and perennials. The threat of frost diminishes by the day, so most gardeners now feel safe planting tender annuals

- Crapemyrtles in most of the area are now showing new growth. Tips of branches that do not show growth can now be pruned. This will not effect this year's flowers.

Reason enough

The argument favoring planting merrybells (Uvularia sessilifolia) is unconvincing, and fortunately my wife rarely questions one plant or the other. Raised eyebrows and incredulous looks are common, however. This native perennial is a slight presence, with sparse foliage and unremarkable blooms, though I consider it quite lovely. So unquestionably, a dozen were required for planting in a prime area along a shaded path. Perhaps, these will never make a show for visitors, but I am mightily pleased no matter how scrawny they are.

A scattered patch of native mayapples (Podophyllum peltatum) has slowly rebounded in the woodland that borders the garden after trees were thinned for timber twenty years ago. I admit to transplanting several from denser shade to hurry the revival along, and recently a mayapple with a different leaf form was discovered and several were moved into a shaded area of the garden with deep soil, a rarity with so many shallow rooted maples and tulip poplars overhanging the garden.

Why we do what we do

No doubt there are rewards in the garden on the bleakest winter day, though a bit more effort is required to find the scattered blooms or whatever it is that pleases the gardener. On this marvelous April afternoon, following a string of days that would satisfy any gardener, there are blooms at every turn. And, in the few spots where there are none, there is foliage that is equally pleasing.

This garden was begun thirty years ago, and on this splendid spring afternoon there is not a care in the world, no weed or dead dogwood to bring the day down. Of course, trouble lurks around the corner, but that’s to worry about another day. Negatives are banished until July (or at least overlooked).

Pollination Q & A
Garden Time with Doug
Here we are in mid-April and what a beautiful time to be living in Virginia with all the shrubs and trees in bloom or coming into bloom.  Some of the color that we are seeing is coming from our fruit trees and shrubs. So many people are adding fruiting trees and shrubs to their landscape and for good reason. This is a strong gardening trend. Why not plant shrubs and trees that not only give you beautiful color with their flowers but also continue to grow and produce edible fruit. Because this is an active gardening trend homeowners are trying to learn as much as possible about growing edible fruits.  Some homeowners have planted fruiting shrubs and trees and are frustrated with the lack of production. I usually get this common question: “I’ve had this plant for a couple of years and it has never produced any fruit at all. What am I doing wrong?”  Read more

Tomatoes
Bonnie's Garden
Tomatoes are native to the Americas, like peppers, and were grown by the Aztecs who called the fruits “tomatl”—meaning “plump thing with navel.” Tomatoes are botanically berries, believe it or not!  So which one is the best? Well, I can only tell you my favorites because there are tiny nuances of flavor that some may prefer over another. My advice is to try one new variety every year. That’s how you find your favorite—that’s how I found mine.  And to help you find yours, here is a list of the tomatoes we’ll be carrying this season... Read more

Bagged Mulch or Bulk Mulch?
Which one is right for me?
Simply put, the decision to buy bulk or bagged mulch depends on price vs. convenience!  In general, bulk mulch will cost a bit less.  For the extra little bit of money, you will pay for bags, you have something that is a little easier to work with.  Either way, we’re confident that you’ll be pleased with the product!  Learn more about your mulch options and check out our Mulch Calculator to determine how much mulch you'll need for your job.

Encore Azaleas
People who adore spring-blooming azaleas can now enjoy an explosion of colors season after season with the Encore Azalea. Each of the many Encore varieties begins their performance with the spring flowering season. Once this “first act” of blooming concludes, new shoots begin to grow and set new buds. The Encore Azalea’s “second act” opens when these buds begin blooming into full color during the summer. This unique bloom season continues through the fall, with the curtain dropping with the onset of colder weather. This is followed by the show beginning anew in the spring.
