| Garden Nuggets - If the common mophead hydrangea needs to be pruned, this should be done immediately after flowering. Flowers buds develop soon after flowers fade in color, so if pruning is done too late the next cycle of flowers is lost. Endless Summer and many newer introductions flower again, usually in late summer after spring flowering, so pruning might delay the second cycle.
- Limelight, Little Lime and other summer blooming hydrangeas should be pruned in late fall, or in early spring.
- Grass seed should be planted in early spring, or beginning in late August or September with cooler temperatures and more regular rainfall for best results. Sod can be installed at any time, but in the summer months it requires substantially more watering.
- While March through May, and September and October are the ideal months for planting, most plants can be installed in the less than prime periods with more attention to watering. We recommend slow watering 2-3 times each week, preferably with a soaker hose so that water soaks in rather than running off. Trees can be efficiently watered with GatorBags or TreeDiapers that release moisture slowly.

Lifetime Warranty on trees and shrubs we install Meadows Farms offers the only Lifetime Warranty on installed trees and shrubs in the area. Warranties vary by company, but most replace plants that die within the first year after planting. Meadows Farms does this, but adds warranty protection for plants (excluding labor) for as long as you reside in your home. And more, many pavers for patios and walks are covered by a 5 year warranty on materials and workmanship. We hope that no plants need replacement, but with extreme temperatures and droughts seemingly every year, the long term protection provided by Meadows Farms warranty is increasingly valuable in protecting your investment. | |

Be Pest Free This Summer Mosquito and Tick Control
Mosquito Shield of Dulles applies mosquito spray that kills and repels mosquitoes and ticks. We treat your common use areas such as pools, decks, patios, and swing sets, paying special attention to where mosquitoes and ticks breed and congregate. Our three-pronged approach kills mosquitoes, masks your CO2 (which attracts mosquitoes), and repels them away from your property. The spray adheres to foliage, wood, stone/brick, and other organic materials. This creates a vertical barrier that strengthens with each visit. Backed by our Unconditional Guarantee! Ramblin' through Dave's garden blog |
| The view My age is showing, I'm certain, when I say that a significant amount of my time is spent at the kitchen table (a new one, thanks to the pandemic) reading the newspaper (a sure sign of an old timer, it seems), or looking out into the garden. I will readily admit that my reading time has diminished as I tire of the same virus related stories day after day, but there's always something of interest peering out into the garden in late spring. Always, there are birds, and usually there are squirrels, and no matter that my wife detests the long tailed rodents, she must admire their daredevil acrobatics as they leap between branches, from tree to tree. And, when the simpler route would be to scamper down the rock paths...... | |
