 | Freeze damage - what to do Two nights this past weekend that dropped to near freezing or below resulted in scattered damage on flowers and fresh growth. Should we be concerned? - Damage to flowers, such as the azalea in this photo, do no harm to the plant. The flowers are lost, of course, but there is no danger that the azalea will fail to survive. - While most trees and shrubs were not harmed, fresh leaves on others were damaged. It is likely that this growth will be lost, but most trees and shrubs will flush another growth to replace the damage. In the next week, the damaged leaves are likely to turn brown, and this can be pruned. In most cases, new growth will quickly cover over damaged leaves and stems. - Some newly planted annuals and emerging perennials have been damaged by the cold. If some green remains it is likely that these will survive. If the entire plant is damaged, in particular with new plantings, the annuals perennials might be lost. However, this will become clear in the next several weeks, so other than pruning damaged leaves it is best to wait. | |

| Moving a few things Yesterday, several of what I figure to be tough as nails terrestrial orchids (Bletilla striata) were dug and transplanted. I have no doubt this is best done immediately following its imminent flowering, but these few had strayed into a crowded clump of sedge (Carex), and occasionally tasks must be undertaken when the mood is high, never mind the risk. I recall my hesitation in purchasing the first few orchids for what seemed a prohibitive price, and while clumps do not multiply as rapidly as, for instance, hellebores and toad lilies (Tricyrtis), there were sufficient numbers a year ago that handfuls were dug to share with our sons. With the initial success, I've been more comfortable making subsequent purchases of orchids in varying colors that have been comparably successful. | |
