How to Start Seeds the Right Way Bonnie's Garden It’s no secret that I’m not a winter fan. I miss my garden. I miss sitting on the deck on a summer evening watching the fireflies light up my garden. In spring I can nibble on a peppery leaf of arugula or a crisp sugar snap pea and in the summer, a handful of cherry tomatoes off the beautiful Sun Sugar growing in a pot on my deck. This time of year might find me staring out the window at a gray February sky—or cuddled in the corner of the sofa with a lapful of seed packets! Of course, there are my usual favorites—Suyo Long cucumber; Jimmy Nardello’s Italian pepper; Cherokee Purple tomatoes—and there will be plenty of others. So what do I do with all this bounty? I start by reading the backs of the seed packets. Learn more about Starting Seeds | |

| February Garden Tasks Garden Time with Doug Here are some February gardening chores: 1. Our plants are still in a dormant state. February is a good month to prune our SUMMER flowering shrubs – NOT SPRING BLOOMERS!! And – only prune if you feel that the plant needs to be pruned. 2. CRABGRASS PRE-EMERGENCE – We are experiencing a mild winter. Plant growth is advanced this year. Don’t miss “the window of opportunity” when it is time to apply to your lawn. You want to get this product down before our forsythia shrubs finish blooming. Only Mother Nature knows when forsythia will start blooming. | |

What Is Corn Gluten Organic Weed Preventer? Don’t worry, it’s not the food ingredient everyone’s trying to avoid! In this case, “Gluten Free” is NOT the goal! Corn Gluten is an all-natural by-product of the production of corn starch. It prevents the establishment of weeds and supplies a source of organic nitrogen. Nitrogen promotes green growth in lawns and the nitrogen in corn gluten is slow released and long-lasting. Corn gluten prevents the roots of seedling weeds from developing. Without root formation, the weed dies from a lack of water since roots deliver water to the rest of the weed. Meadows Farms recommends Espoma Organic Weed Preventer plus Lawn Food.
