Simple Secrets for Growing Citrus
Bonnie's Garden
Citrus trees are fun and easy to grow—if you give them what they need.  Correct light is important.  Pick a window that gets six or more hours of direct sunlight. An unobstructed south window is best—no sheer curtains, blinds, tinted glass or overhang, and no trees outside.  See Bonnie's Secrets for Growing Citrus

Is It Spring?  The Weather Sure Makes It Seem So
Garden Time with Doug
Wow, my last writing for February. March will be here next week. The spring season is officially here in 24 days. But, as I drive around the area I am seeing plants in bloom that shouldn’t be this time of year. Yesterday, I saw both the Star Magnolia and a Saucer Magnolia in bloom. I was reminiscing about the old Maymont Flower and Garden Show that would have been this past week if it still existed and seeing the Bradford Pear trees in bloom along 6th street. So, we have dealt with our plants blooming early in the past. But, it is what it is this year.  Read more

What Is Corn Gluten Organic Weed Preventer?
Don’t worry, it’s not the food ingredient everyone’s trying to avoid! In this case, “Gluten Free” is NOT the goal! Corn Gluten is an all-natural by-product of the production of corn starch. It prevents the establishment of weeds and supplies a source of organic nitrogen. Nitrogen promotes green growth in lawns and the nitrogen in corn gluten is slow released and long-lasting.  Corn gluten prevents the roots of seedling weeds from developing. Without root formation, the weed dies from a lack of water since roots deliver water to the rest of the weed. Meadows Farms recommends Espoma Organic Weed Preventer plus Lawn Food.  Learn more about Organic Corn Gluten by Espoma

Fruit Trees
A fruit tree in your landscape is an investment that will pay dividends for years to come. Once you allow a fruit tree to become established, it will provide a bountiful harvest of your favorite fruits that are fresher and so much sweeter than anything you can find in your local supermarket. Here is just a sampling of the fruit tree varieties we will carry in our stores.

Lifetime Warranty on trees and shrubs we install

Meadows Farms offers the only Lifetime Warranty on installed trees and shrubs in the area. Warranties vary by company, but most replace plants that die within the first year after planting. Meadows Farms does this, but adds warranty protection for plants (excluding labor) for as long as you reside in your home. And more, many pavers for patios and walks are covered by a 5 year warranty on materials and workmanship.

We hope that no plants need replacement, but with extreme temperatures and droughts seemingly every year, the long term protection provided by Meadows Farms warranty is increasingly valuable in protecting your investment.

12 month no interest financing available for Landscape installations
Looking to update your landscaping? Add screening, a new patio, walk, or deck with our convenient financing options. Easy online application and quick approval so you can make decisions today instead of delaying projects.

No interest if paid in full within 12 months with regular monthly payments. Visit our website for more information or to apply online for financing.

  Ramblin' through Dave's garden blog
Not bad, pretty good, can't complain

Yes, I know. I should not celebrate this mild winter. The planet is doomed unless we change the errors of our ways, but how can a gardener be blamed for enjoying the occasional winter when snow doesn't cover the garden, and when the chill is mild enough that there are blooms everyday? And, not just the few flowers of witch hazels that bloom if it's fifty degrees or ten below.

I've long planted for winter flowers, but most years there are a few scattered flowers in January, with increasing numbers into late February. This winter, all are a few weeks early, and while this inevitably means flowers will fade a week earlier. there are plenty more blooms coming on then.

GREAT PEOPLE WANTED

We are currently interviewing for Landscape foremen positions for our Chantilly and Fredericksburg VA locations with openings in our Planting, Hardscaping, and Maintenance departments. Landscape foremen are paid top of the trade, with a full benefit package. Inquiries from Landscape Architects and Designers are welcomed at any time, though hiring is typically done in late winter.

How to Start Seeds the Right Way
Bonnie's Garden
It’s no secret that I’m not a winter fan. I miss my garden. I miss sitting on the deck on a summer evening watching the fireflies light up my garden. In spring I can nibble on a peppery leaf of arugula or a crisp sugar snap pea and in the summer, a handful of cherry tomatoes off the beautiful Sun Sugar growing in a pot on my deck.  This time of year might find me staring out the window at a gray February sky—or cuddled in the corner of the sofa with a lapful of seed packets!  Of course, there are my usual favorites—Suyo Long cucumber; Jimmy Nardello’s Italian pepper; Cherokee Purple tomatoes—and there will be plenty of others. So what do I do with all this bounty? I start by reading the backs of the seed packets.  Learn more about Starting Seeds

February Garden Tasks
Garden Time with Doug
Here are some February gardening chores:
1.  Our plants are still in a dormant state. February is a good month to prune our SUMMER flowering shrubs  – NOT SPRING BLOOMERS!! And  –  only prune if you feel that the plant needs to be pruned.
2.  CRABGRASS PRE-EMERGENCE  –  We are experiencing a mild winter. Plant growth is advanced this year. Don’t miss “the window of opportunity” when it is time to apply to your lawn.  You want to get this product down before our forsythia shrubs finish blooming. Only Mother Nature knows when forsythia will start blooming.
