Each grass species has its own unique form- they may form low compact mounds, tall screens, or densely spreading mats. The foliage colors include various shades of green, blue, and red, as well as variegated varieties having red, white, or yellow foliage banded with ivory or yellow stripes. October Gardening Tasks Garden Time with Doug FALL IS FOR PLANTING – OCTOBER IS A BEAUTIFUL MONTH TO BE LIVING IN VIRGINIA!! I love the fall season. It is my favorite season of all. The days have become cooler and leaves are beginning to change color. What would make this time of year even more perfect is if we would have had more rainfall in September to start October. WATER, WATER, WATER!! We had less than an inch of rain in the month of September, making September one of the driest months on record ( last year we had one of the wettest September on record ). Couple this with the fact that we only had a little over 2 inches of rain in August and, needless to say, we are dry here for the start of October. So, keep those new plants watered regularly and we will be just fine to plant this time of year. Read more from Doug

| Peonies: Beautiful, Fragrant, and Deer Resistant Bonnie's Garden
In the spring, I sit on my deck and admire the peonies in the back of my yard. I watch the occasional deer walk by—and keep on walking. They don’t eat them! I cut a few buds to bring inside because the fragrance is wonderful. I appreciate the beauty that they have brought to my yard for the past 21 years. They’re beautiful, tough and durable and well-loved. Here are some interesting tidbits about these amazing perennials.
