Early Season Bloomers
You can call them pre-spring or late-winter flowers, either way, Early Season Bloomers are the first signs of life and a welcome relief from winter’s dull gray landscape.  The following is a listing courtesy of Washington Gardener Magazine of plants in their order of bloom dates here in the greater Washington, DC region and Mid-Atlantic states. The bloom time may vary by variety, your location, and the local weather patterns. In general though, you can rely on these bloomers coming out well ahead of the traditional start of spring on March 20.  See our Early Bloomer List

Perennials Are Arriving!
Perennials are a fantastic addition to any garden.  Not only do they bloom year after year from one single planting, but with the right choices and a bit of gardening know-how, you can plant perennials that bloom all throughout the season, giving you consistent color each year without having to supplement with annual plantings. These perennials are mid to late-spring bloomers that will provide color throughout May and into June and July, providing continuous color from one season to the next.  See our list of May blooming sun and shade perennials

Mulching Soon?
Preen season-long weed control
Preen garden weed preventer stops weeds when they're seeds and prevents them from germinating in flower and vegetable gardens, in ground covers and around trees and shrubs.  By preventing new weeds from sprouting, you eliminate the need for difficult and time-consuming hand-weeding.  Without weeds, your valuable plants can grow larger and stronger.  Early spring is the optimal time to apply Preen.  One application blocks weeds for up to 3 months so your beds will stay neat and weed-free all season long!  Why pull or kill weeds when you can prevent weeds with Preen?  Here's a short video on getting the jump on weeds

My Top 5 Favorite Vegetables
Bonnie's Garden
I try to plant at least one new thing every year—both in my flower and my veggie/herb garden. Over the past few years, I’ve come up with a list of my favorite vegetables so far. As I continue to try new things, this list is definitely subject to change. Most of my favorite vegetables are not necessarily the “standard” varieties. Some of them are a little less than traditional and you may well like another variety better. It’s really all about “customizing” your garden to your tastes.  Just in case you’re interested, here are some of my favorites

Corn Gluten Weed Preventer
It's Organic!
Don’t worry, it’s not the food ingredient everyone’s trying to avoid! In this case, “Gluten Free” is NOT the goal! Corn Gluten is an all-natural by-product of the production of corn starch. It prevents the establishment of weeds and supplies a source of organic nitrogen. Nitrogen promotes green growth in lawns and the nitrogen in corn gluten is slow released and long-lasting.  Corn gluten prevents the roots of seedling weeds from developing. Without root formation, the weed dies from a lack of water since roots deliver water to the rest of the weed. Meadows Farms recommends Espoma Organic Weed Preventer plus Lawn Food.  Learn more about Corn Gluten Weed Preventer

Pruning
Pruning is one of those garden chores that if done right can pay dividends for the entire season. Good pruning and maintenance of your landscape trees and shrubs help them grow strong and healthy during their growing season while allowing air and light to circulate through the plant. Despite the benefits of pruning, a little knowledge does go a long way.  Learn more about pruning

Peas Please
Bonnie's Garden
My granddad always planted his garden peas between the middle and end of March. That means that right now is a perfect time. The first thing you need to do is decide which kind of pea you want to plant.  Do you want to plant English or “shelling” peas? These are the traditional green pea—sweet and tender little peas that need to be shelled because the pods are tough and stringy.  Maybe you want snow peas? Snow peas are picked when the pods haven’t filled out yet because when the tiny peas inside begin to fatten up, the pods get stringier.  Or maybe you want snap peas—crispy crunchy sweet pods that can be eaten at any stage. Here are a few tips to get started growing peas
