 | Garden Nuggets - Damage from cold temperatures can often not be assessed until warmer weather. Damp soils going into our recent cold temperatures will be advantageous to plants, but some evergreens such as nandinas are likely to show signs of winter damage. - Cold damage is unlikely on most long established plants. Newly planted evergreens, particularly broadleafed evergreens such as hollies, are most susceptible to injury. Most plants in this area are rated as cold hardy to zone 7, which is a yearly low of zero degrees (Fahrenheit), and many common area plants are cold hardy to five and ten below zero. - Over wintered foliage of perennials and ornamental grasses should be cut back prior to new growth that begins in late March or April. - March and early April are ideal times to plant deciduous and evergreen plants, even with the continued threat of cold. Dormant perennials can also be planted, but tender annuals should not be planted until the threat of frost is past. - March is the recommended time for application of pre-emergent weed controls for lawn and garden beds. | |

| Better late .... In January, there was widespread concern, though none in this garden, that daffodils grown three inches tall, with the worst of winter ahead, would surely be damaged by cold. Six weeks later, these have hardly grown another inch, though the start of flowers are visible on some. As is usual, the common 'February Gold' will not flower in February, though it is likely to be the first of several to bloom in this garden. The early flowering, that seemed inevitable weeks ago, has turned so that many late winter blooms will be delayed by a week or two. | |
