Opened flowers of daffodils can be injured by temperatures near zero, but it is nearly impossible to protect them. - Damage from cold temperatures can often not be assessed until warmer weather. Damp soils going into our recent cold temperatures will be advantageous to plants, but some evergreens such as nandinas are likely to show signs of winter damage. Browned leaves are rarely a problem, and the cold that is forecast is not unusually severe. - Cold damage is unlikely on most long established plants. Newly planted evergreens, particularly broadleafed evergreens such as hollies, are most susceptible to injury. Most plants in this area are rated as cold hardy to zone 7, which is a yearly low of zero degrees (Fahrenheit), and many common area plants are cold hardy to five and ten below zero. - Heavy accumulations of snow or ice can be removed by gently nudging branches of trees and shrubs with a rake or broom. Avoid sharp blows that might cause injury. Only branches that are leaning under the weight of ice or snow should be cleaned, and if snow is expected to melt quickly there is no need to take any action. - Winter flowering witch hazels, hellebores, and bulbs such as snowdrops are a highlight of the garden in January and February. To showcase these, piles of leaves should be removed from low growing plants. | | _____________________________________________________________________ | Contact our lawn and garden maintenance department for a free estimate on any of our services Spring cleanup and mulching - free pre-emergent weed control - Mulching and planting bed maintenance - Deer repellent application - Mosquito and tick repellents - Lawn renovations - Lawn and landscape fertilizing and pest control - Weed control in the lawn or planting areas - Organic lawn and garden controls Call or contact us through our website for a free estimate 703-327-5050 301-353-0606 extension 5 | | _____________________________________________________________________ | Lifetime Warranty on trees and shrubs we install Meadows Farms offers the only Lifetime Warranty on installed trees and shrubs in the area. Without a doubt, the winter hiatus from the garden's chores is appreciated, three weeks seems adequate, and now I'm anxious for winter to be over. But, wishing doesn't make it so. While flowers of typical winter blooming mahonias (above) and witch hazels are present, and the first blooms of snowdrops (below) are nearing their peak (with others barely breaking ground), progress is slow for late winter bloomers that occasionally flower weeks early in a mild winter. Swelling flower buds of hellebores, paperbushes (Edgeworthia chrysantha, left), and Leatherleaf mahonias (Mahonia bealei) are closely monitored in winter's second half, sometimes daily, begging encouragement as winter drags on. | | | GREAT PEOPLE WANTED We are currently interviewing for Landscape foremen positions for our Chantilly and Fredericksburg VA locations with openings in our Planting, Hardscaping, and Maintenance departments. Landscape foremen are paid top of the trade, with a full benefit package. Inquiries from Landscape Architects and Designers are welcomed at any time, though hiring is typically done in late winter.
