 | Garden Nuggets - Damage from cold temperatures can often not be assessed until warmer weather. Fortunately, mild temperatures in recent weeks, and plenty of soil moisture should be advantageous to plants, but inevitably there will be some periods of cold. In some cases, cold injury will not be evident until new growth begins in late March and April. - Cold damage is unlikely on most long established plants. Newly planted evergreens, particularly broadleafed evergreens such as hollies, are most susceptible to injury. - Brown leaves remaining on some Japanese maples are not a problem. These will be shed before spring, and normal growth should resume. However, the leaves can cause additional accumulation of snow or ice that can cause damage. - Heavy accumulations of snow or ice can be removed by gently nudging branches of trees and shrubs with a rake or broom. Avoid sharp blows that might cause injury. Only branches that are leaning under the weight of ice or snow should be cleaned, and if snow is expected to melt quickly there is no need to take any action. - Winter flowering hellebores and bulbs such as snowdrops are a highlight of the garden in January and February. To showcase these, piles of leaves should be removed. | |

| Flowers in the snow. Why bother? I suspect that few gardeners are out today, stomping through ten inches of snow, except to rescue arching branches of evergreens from permanent disfigurement. Today is not ideal for surveying flowers in the garden, though the sun pokes through occasionally and the day feels warmer than the thirty-five degrees (Fahrenheit) that the thermometer indicates. Blooms of hellebores are showing just a bit of color in this garden, but now they are buried under inches of wet snow that will further delay opening of flowers if melting lingers more than a few days. Quite uncommon a decade ago, hellebores have become a standard for winter flowers, even if many do not bloom until very late in the season. | |
