Garden Nuggets

- Cold damage from temperatures below ten degrees is unlikely for daffodils, snowdrops, and other spring flowering bulbs that have foliage that has broken above ground. Opened flowers of daffodils can be injured by temperatures near zero, but it is nearly impossible to protect them.

- Damage from cold temperatures can often not be assessed until warmer weather. Damp soils going into our recent cold temperatures will be advantageous to plants, but some evergreens such as nandinas are likely to show signs of winter damage. Browned leaves are rarely a problem, and the cold that is forecast is not unusually severe.

- Cold damage is unlikely on most long established plants. Newly planted evergreens, particularly broadleafed evergreens such as hollies, are most susceptible to injury. Most plants in this area are rated as cold hardy to zone 7, which is a yearly low of zero degrees (Fahrenheit), and many common area plants are cold hardy to five and ten below zero.

- Heavy accumulations of snow or ice can be removed by gently nudging branches of trees and shrubs with a rake or broom. Avoid sharp blows that might cause injury. Only branches that are leaning under the weight of ice or snow should be cleaned, and if snow is expected to melt quickly there is no need to take any action.

- Winter flowering witch hazels, hellebores, and bulbs such as snowdrops are a highlight of the garden in January and February. To showcase these, piles of leaves should be removed from low growing plants.

Evidence of spring's approach

Evidence of spring's approach is scant, typical for this part of Virginia in late January, but of course, less than hoped for. Without a doubt, the winter hiatus from the garden's chores is appreciated, three weeks seems adequate, and now I'm anxious for winter to be over. But, wishing doesn't make it so.

While flowers of typical winter blooming mahonias (above) and witch hazels are present, and the first blooms of snowdrops (below) are nearing their peak (with others barely breaking ground), progress is slow for late winter bloomers that occasionally flower weeks early in a mild winter. Swelling flower buds of hellebores, paperbushes (Edgeworthia chrysantha, left), and Leatherleaf mahonias (Mahonia bealei) are closely monitored in winter's second half, sometimes daily, begging encouragement as winter drags on.

Fiddle-Leaf Figs
The Fiddle-leaf Fig, or Ficus lyrata for us nursery folk, is a houseplant that has risen in popularity over the last few years. It’s tree-like form, sculptural habit, and large, waxy, violin-shaped leaves have made it a popular houseplant for indoor gardeners and a trendy topic for design blogs and articles. Despite the high praise, Fiddle-leaf Figs can be a bit temperamental for the uninitiated. However, it’s not as hard to care for them as you think. Just follow the guidelines listed below, and you can enjoy the beauty of a Fiddle-leaf Fig without the downsides.  Learn more about Fiddle-leaf Figs

Bonnie's Garden
There’s not a lot to look at outside this time of year.  Maybe that’s why I enjoy watching the birds. Of course, the best way to attract birds is with bird-feeders.  And I like knowing that it helps the birds, too.  A study conducted during a Wisconsin winter showing that black-capped chickadees with access to human-supplied bird seed had a winter survival rate almost double that of chickadees without access.  Because there aren’t many insects available over the winter, most of the birds that winter here are seed eaters.  Some seeds are better than others, however.  Seeds and nuts with a higher fat content are best for winter feeding—black oil sunflower seeds and even peanuts  Read more from Bonnie

Hellebores
A Cure for the Winter Blues
Talking Gardening with Doug
Adding color to the landscape can be challenging at this time of the year. Yes, pansies and violas will keep blooming all winter long. If you haven’t planted pansies or violas up to this point, you can still plant and enjoy seeing them in bloom. We still have a decent selection of pansies for you to choose from outside our nursery.  But, what else will flower you may ask?  Consider planting Hellebores. This evergreen, hardy, shade-loving perennial is just getting “warmed up” in the garden. My hellebores are just beginning to bloom in the landscape. And, the cold snap and snow this past week has had no effect on this plant. Learn more about hellebores

Quite a commotion

Typically, I see no robins in the garden from late autumn until the period in February when temperatures become more mild, promising that spring is near. But today, in mid-January dozens jump anxiously from a large holly halfway across the garden to the edge of the forest, and back again, repeatedly. I wonder what is exciting them, but also, why have they not flown south?

Bluejays, cardinals, and chickadees also seem more animated than usual as they pluck sunflowers from the feeder. Perhaps they are aroused by the robins' commotion, or is it the impending storm that will bring an inch or more of chilly rain later this afternoon? As the rain passes through it will be followed by our coldest days of the winter, with temperatures falling below ten degrees overnight, and possibly nearer zero (Fahrenheit) tomorrow.
