Winter Bird Feeding
Talking Gardening with Doug
Winter will be here, officially, in just a few days. Just imagine what it must be like for our feathered friends. How do they stay warm? Or, what do birds eat when the ground and shrubs are covered in snow?  Every year I get more attached to birding. So, between my love of gardening and now my love of birding, I seem to spend a lot of my free time outdoors with nature. I love it and wouldn’t trade it for the world. Read more

Christmas Tree Care
Because we buy so many Christmas trees, our growers cut our trees just prior to loading them on trucks for delivery to us.  This helps insure that we always have the freshest trees possible for our customers.  Some trees hold their needles longer than others, but it is more a matter of care and preservation measures after you get the tree home as to how long most trees can hold their needles. See our tips for caring for your fresh cut tree

Poinsettia Care
Poinsettias are the number one potted plant sold in the U. S.  This is amazing given the fact that they are mainly sold during the Christmas holiday season.  For the holidays, place the poinsettia in bright indirect light and allow the soil to dry moderately between thorough waterings. Learn more
We are surrounded by beautiful poinsettias right now so here are some interesting tidbits about them.

Paperwhites
I love paperwhites. They are easy to bloom—and fast! What’s more, they are inexpensive and beautiful.  When will paperwhites bloom?  Paperwhites started now will take around three to four weeks to bloom. I don’t usually try to get mine to bloom by a certain date; I just enjoy them whenever they bloom. If you do want to try to hit a target date, then I’d recommend planting two or three bowls about a week apart.  Learn more

Amaryllis
Amaryllis showed up a couple of weeks ago and I’m getting a lot of questions on how to grow these beautiful giants.  The good news is they’re a whole lot easier than you might think.  There are just a few things to keep in mind. In every grocery store these days, you can find amaryllis in boxes—a red, a white, a pink, and a red-and-white stripe.  If you need a grab-and-go quick gift, they’re great.  But if you are growing something for yourself or family or friends, look for just the bulb and plant it yourself. With amaryllis, the bigger the bulb for the variety, the more flowers you get—hands down.   Read more

Holiday Cactus
One of the plants you’ll see almost everywhere this time of year is Christmas/Thanksgiving/ Holiday cactus. So here are some interesting facts about these beautiful seasonal bloomers.  When they bloom in their native habitat in Brazil, they are beautiful spring bloomers that the locals call “Flor de Maia” or May Flower!

The Winter Solstice
Bonnie's Garden
One This Friday, December 21st, is the Winter Solstice—the shortest day of the year; the first official day of Winter; Yule.  The days, which have been getting shorter and shorter each day since the Summer Solstice, now will begin getting longer by a minute or two each day.  Many cultures around the world have celebrated the Winter Solstice.  Read more from Bonnie
