Maybe you didn’t even know that Virginia had a Christmas Tree Growers Association. It is an active association with many growers being members. In Virginia, we have over 4,600 acres being used to grow Christmas trees. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, Virginia is # 10 in the U.S. by the number of operations with Christmas trees and # 7 by total trees harvested and total acreage. | December Gardening Thoughts Talking Gardening with Doug Here we are in December. Mother Nature has been very kind to us when it comes to all the rain this year. We NEVER want our plants to be dry going into any cold snap. I have a soil thermometer that I check regularly. As of December 1st, our soil temperature is 44 degrees – well above freezing. This means that you can still plant and do landscape this time of year. As the temperatures cool down, remember our feathered friends by keeping a bird feeder filled. Protect your outdoor fountains this winter by draining them to prevent cracking due to expanding ice, then covering them so they won’t collect rainwater. If you received a poinsettia for the holidays and it is wrapped in decorative foil, be sure to punch some holes in the bottom in order to allow excess water to drain. Paperwhites
I love paperwhites. They are easy to bloom—and fast! What’s more, they are inexpensive and beautiful. When will paperwhites bloom? Paperwhites started now will take around three to four weeks to bloom. I don’t usually try to get mine to bloom by a certain date; I just enjoy them whenever they bloom. If you do want to try to hit a target date, then I’d recommend planting two or three bowls about a week apart. Learn more | |
