Garden Nuggets

- With substantial rainfall from spring into summer, weeds are flourishing in lawns and planting beds. Many (such as crabgrass and nutsedge) are annual weeds that will be killed by frost, but seeds have already been dropped for next year's crop. Pre-emergent herbicides are best applied in late winter to prevent germination of the next crop of weeds.

- Weeds in planting beds should be pulled when they are small so that seeds don't develop. Also, small weeds are often easier to pull, in particular when soils are damp.

- With constant moisture and high humidity, this summer we have seen many cases of white to yellow, or orange slime molds (often identified as fungi) growing in mulch. This is caused by moisture and decaying organic material (such as hardwood mulch), and is more prevalent in shaded areas. Slime molds are harmless to neighboring plants, and usually are very temporary. There is no harm in scooping up and disposing of the slime mold, but it is not necessary.

- October is the best time for planting spring bulbs such as daffodils, crocuses, and hyacinths. These are sturdy perennials bulbs that will return dependably every spring. Tulips are less dependable in our poorly drained clay soils. For best results these must be lifted, stored, and replanted each fall.

- Alliums (ornamental onions) are exceptional, sturdy bulbs that are certain to put on a show. Flowers can be small or softball size.

- Cooler temperatures and more consistent soil moisture give excellent results when planting trees and shrubs in October and November. Lawns should be seeded as early as possible while soil temperatures are warm. Broadleaf evergreens such as hollies and laurels are best planted before regular freezing temperatures, which are rare before the start of December. Planting can be done in December, but the risk becomes greater if temperatures become unusually cold.

  Ramblin' through Dave's garden blog
Surprising blooms

Unsurprisingly and typically, I'm clueless to explain why 'Jelena' witch hazel is flowering in September instead of mid-February. No unusual weather event explains this, and this is not a single flower or stem, but every bud on every branch. Four other winter flowering witch hazels nearby show no sign of imminent flowering, or even swelling buds.

Out of season flowering is not unusual for azaleas and forsythias, certainly some others, but never witnessed with witch hazels in two decades or so that one or another has inhabited this garden. Despite my pleadings to the contrary, I am at least as observant as the next gardener, but this, I can't figure. Very likely, this will be the first, and last time that 'Jelena' will flower so early.

GREAT PEOPLE WANTED

Meadows Farms is always on the lookout for great employees who enjoy working outdoors. Landscape foremen and trainees are hired year around, and crew members primarily through the spring and fall seasons. Landscape foremen are paid top of the trade, with a full benefit package. Inquiries from Landscape Architects and Designers are welcomed at any time, though hiring is typically done in late winter.
