| September Gardening Chores Talking Gardening with Doug SEPTEMBER, OFFICIALLY KICKS OFF THE “FALL IS FOR PLANTING” SEASON. September is the beginning of a very important time for gardening and planting. Like meteorology (weather), the first of September starts the fall planting season even though fall is not officially here until Saturday, the 22nd. We have had rain throughout the summer. Depending on where you live we had nearly 5 inches of rain during the month of August. Our soil is not dry as we enter September. Yes, it would be nice to have fall-like temperatures to go along with all this rain. But, lower temperatures will be coming soon. This year, more than many of our past fall seasons, all this abundance of rain has created the “perfect storm” when it comes to the fall planting season. Why do you ask? The reason is that our soil is moist and our soil is warm = the “perfect storm.” Roots develop in moist, warm soil. Here is a short list of September gardening tasks | |

Fall Mums Chrysanthemums are a must-have for the fall garden. No other fall flower delivers as much color for as long and as reliably as good ol' mums. Mums liven up the fading fall garden with handsome flowers of nearly all shades and colors. Some varieties have daisy blooms; others may be rounded globes, flat, fringed, quill shape, or spoon shape. They work exceptionally well in container plantings and pots. Learn more about mums

Fall Vegetable Garden To Do List Bonnie's Garden I’m getting my vegetable garden ready for fall now. I just pulled up the last of the squash. Most of my tomatoes are now long tired looking vines with only a few blooms at the tips—and they won’t have time to set fruit and ripen by the first frost. I pulled them up. I’ve pulled out the cucumbers and the green beans, too. The peppers are long gone—victims of all the rain we got earlier this summer. It’s a bit sad pulling up what was a beautiful productive summer garden—until I remember all the veggies I get to grow now. See Bonnie's Fall Garden To-Do list
