Early Bloomers It happens every winter. We gardeners hit “the wall” where we want, need, crave just a little bit of spring. The best way I’ve found to cope with that special brand of cabin fever is to seek out as many early-blooming plants as I can to add to my garden. You can call them pre-spring or late-winter flowers. Either way they are the first signs of life and a welcome relief from winter’s dull gray landscape. See our list of Early Bloomers

March Gardening Checklist Are you ready to get outside and enjoy your gardens? March has finally arrived. I love having more daylight making our days seem longer. DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME begins this Sunday, March 8, which will make evening hours lighter. We have had such a mild winter so far. I wish I had a crystal ball to see what our weather will be for the month of March. I know we have a couple of days in the ’70s this week, which I am enjoying. However, a couple of years ago we had a cold, wet, and wintry March. Let’s hope for the best. As you can see driving around that we have plants beginning to grow and bloom. A Weeping Willow in my neighborhood is leafing out. I think it is safe to say that our plants are two to three weeks ahead of schedule which goes to prove that we need to follow Mother Nature and not just a calendar to tell us what needs to be done and when. Here are a few MARCH GARDENING TIPS

Mosquito Shield of Dulles Mosquito and Tick Control We apply mosquito spray that kills and repels mosquitoes and ticks. We treat your common use areas such as pools, decks, patios, and swing sets, paying special attention to where mosquitoes and ticks breed and congregate. Our three-pronged approach kills mosquitoes, masks your CO2 (which attracts mosquitoes), and repels them away from your property. The spray adheres to foliage, wood, stone/brick, and other organic materials. This creates a vertical barrier that strengthens with each visit. Backed by our Unconditional Guarantee! What Is Corn Gluten Organic Weed Preventer? Don’t worry, it’s not the food ingredient everyone’s trying to avoid! In this case, “Gluten Free” is NOT the goal! Corn Gluten is an all-natural by-product of the production of corn starch. It prevents the establishment of weeds and supplies a source of organic nitrogen. Nitrogen promotes green growth in lawns and the nitrogen in corn gluten is slow released and long-lasting. Corn gluten prevents the roots of seedling weeds from developing. Without root formation, the weed dies from a lack of water since roots deliver water to the rest of the weed. Meadows Farms recommends Espoma Organic Weed Preventer plus Lawn Food. Simple Secrets for Growing Citrus Bonnie's Garden Citrus trees are fun and easy to grow—if you give them what they need. Correct light is important. Pick a window that gets six or more hours of direct sunlight. An unobstructed south window is best—no sheer curtains, blinds, tinted glass or overhang, and no trees outside.
