Garden Nuggets

Coming soon .... visit Meadows Farms garden exhibit at the Capital Remodel and Garden Show February 21-23. Discount tickets will become available two weeks prior to the show.

- Recent mild temperatures have encouraged early flowering of snowdrops and hellebores. Soon, we'll see foliage of daffodils emerging. Though the near forecast predicts mild temperatures, the end of January will turn colder. Cold damage is unlikely for winter flowering shrubs such as witch hazels, and spring flowering bulbs that have foliage that has broken above ground. Opened flowers of daffodils can be injured by temperatures near zero, but it is nearly impossible to protect them.

- Damage from cold temperatures can often not be assessed until warmer weather. Damp soils are advantageous to plants, but some evergreens such as nandinas are likely to show signs of winter damage if temperatures drop below ten degrees. Browned leaves are rarely a problem.

- Cold damage is unlikely on most long established plants. Newly planted evergreens, particularly broadleafed evergreens such as hollies, are most susceptible to injury. Most plants in this area are rated as cold hardy to zone 7, which is a yearly low of zero degrees (Fahrenheit), and many common area plants are cold hardy to five and ten below zero.

- Heavy accumulations of snow or ice can be removed by gently nudging branches of trees and shrubs with a rake or broom. Avoid sharp blows that might cause injury. Only branches that are leaning under the weight of ice or snow should be cleaned, and if snow is expected to melt quickly there is no need to take any action.

- Winter flowering witch hazels, hellebores, and bulbs such as snowdrops are a highlight of the garden in January and February. To showcase these, piles of leaves should be removed from low growing plants.

  Ramblin' through Dave's garden blog

A marvelous, mild early winter

Certainly, there is trouble ahead, there must be, despite reports from forecasters that no temperatures below mid teens (Fahrenheit) are expected in the seven weeks until spring (the gardener's spring, March 1). Though today is gray, damp, and dreary, it is also mild. It is exaggerated to claim that the garden is filled with flowers, but not overstated that there are blooms at every turn. This afternoon, a small frog leaped for safety as I walked past. In January.

What trouble lies ahead? Is it possible that the wire netting bushes (Corokia microphyllus)) wil not require winter protection? Or, anise shrubs (Illicium floridanum 'Pink Frost') and fatsia (Fatsia japonica 'Spider's Web') that are likely to be over promised as hardy to zero?
