Foliage Plants Are More Than Just Decorative Home Accents
Garden Time with Doug
Have you ever considered going indoors to “get a breath of fresh air?” It’s not as crazy as it sounds, considering the level of air pollution we experience daily from automobile engines, factories, asphalt fumes, and pesticide use. A few well-placed house plants can make your indoor air safer to breathe.  As a general rule of thumb, the larger the leaves, the more efficient the plant is at cleaning the air.  How do plants clean the air?  Learn more from Doug

Lucky Bamboo:  Houseplant Highlight for January
Garden Time with Doug
The past few years, lucky bamboo has had a surge in popularity. The University of Arkansas’ agricultural website attributes its “rise to stardom in the horticultural world as a sign of the multinational world we now live in. It’s a fusion of eastern mysticism, western New Age culture, good marketing savvy and the laws governing plant importation.”  One fact that makes this lucky plant so attractive is its ability to be trained into shapes like swirls, curls, or braids. To me, the popularity of lucky bamboo comes from its unique look and the fact that it is low maintenance.  Learn more about Bamboo

Garden Nuggets

Coming soon .... visit Meadows Farms garden exhibit at the Capital Remodel and Garden Show February 21-23. Discount tickets will become available two weeks prior to the show.

Recent mild temperatures have encouraged new growth of many spring bulbs, with early types of snowdrops already flowering. There should be no damage to flowers or emerging foliage, and no protection is needed from short periods of cold through the remainder of winter.

- Cold damage is very unlikely for winter flowering shrubs such as witch hazels, or for winter flowering hellebores.

- While damage to broad leafed evergreens is unlikely, damage to evergreens such as hollies and laurels from cold temperatures can often not be assessed until warmer weather. Damp soils are advantageous to plants, but some evergreens such as nandinas are likely to show signs of winter damage if temperatures drop below ten degrees. Browned leaves are rarely a problem.

- In the event of heavy accumulations of snow or ice, this can be removed by gently nudging branches of trees and shrubs with a rake or broom. Avoid sharp blows that might cause injury. Only branches that are leaning under the weight of ice or snow should be cleaned, and if snow is expected to melt quickly there is no need to take any action.

- Landscape designers are often booked for several weeks beginning in early March, so it can be advantageous to schedule an appointment when their calendars aren't filled.

Lifetime Warranty on trees and shrubs we install

Meadows Farms offers the only Lifetime Warranty on installed trees and shrubs in the area. Warranties vary by company, but most replace plants that die within the first year after planting. Meadows Farms does this, but adds warranty protection for plants (excluding labor) for as long as you reside in your home. And more, many pavers for patios and walks are covered by a 5 year warranty on materials and workmanship.

We hope that no plants need replacement, but with extreme temperatures and droughts seemingly every year, the long term protection provided by Meadows Farms warranty is increasingly valuable in protecting your investment.

Cut, or not

Most years, there is no question that leaves of hellebores, damaged and browned after typical January temperatures that occasionally drop to near zero (Fahrenheit), must be removed to be rid of the weathered leaves and so that flowers are more visible. Even in a mild winter, the foliage of several vigorous hellebores obscures flowers that are nestled beneath, so the best practice is to remove leaves in mid December, before flowers are prominent. This task is rarely accomplished so early in this garden, and on occasion leaves are left without cutting at all.

This winter has been quite mild, I say so far, but there's nothing colder in the forecast. With mild temperatures, snowdrops, witch hazels, and hellebores are advancing into bloom weeks ahead of schedule.

What's A Gardener To Do In January?
Garden Time with Doug
“Well, the weather outside is frightful”  –  No, wait, this is not the case in 2020.  Here we are in early January and we are having some nice weather and temperatures that allow us to get outside into our gardens and enjoy ourselves with our beloved plants.  I always love sharing the temperature of our soil.  As of January 3, our soil temperature is 50 degrees.  It didn’t hurt having a record warm day four days earlier with 73 degrees.  Another added bonus for this time of year is that we are having some good, timely rainfall to keep our soil moist for our plants.  A common gardening question this time of year is “can I still plant?”  Because of our current soil temperature and rainfall, my answer to this common planting question is a resounding YES!  See Doug's January gardening suggestions

Should Gardeners Be Worried About This Warm Start To Winter?
Garden Time with Doug
The quick answer is: It depends. I feel bad for those of you who like the cold and snow. Our long-range forecast is for our winter temperatures to remain above normal, on average, with the coldest periods to be in mid – and late January and early and late February. At the same time, our precipitation is expected to be above normal with below-normal snowfall.  So, what about our plants? Will they stay dormant and not be harmed?  Learn more from Doug

One or two more

Not unusually, I am conflicted by the relative lacking of witch hazels in the garden. Always, there is something that must be had such as the sturdy and beautiful witch hazels, but with little open space available for shrubs, and less in sunny spots, decisions to purchase must be delayed until the off seasons. To decide in January that more witch hazels are necessary weighs too heavily on emotion. Of course, more fragrant, brightly colored blooms are required while in the throes of the gray winter, but will this stand in May, or August?

Complicating this matter is the changing state of the somewhat sunny lower half of the rear garden in recent years. This area was once ideal for an 'Arnold Promise' (Hamamelis x intermedia 'Arnold Promise', above) witch hazel that grew taller than ten feet........
