| August Gardening Chores Talking Gardening with Doug THE MONTH OF AUGUST CAN BE VIEWED AS THE “GATEWAY TO FALL” AND TO THE FALL PLANTING SEASON. So, let’s recap July. The only complaint I am hearing from homeowners and landscapers is with all the rainy days. I can agree. All this rain is leading to an increase in plants dying from root rot and all the fungal issues such as powdery mildew. We had over 5 and a half inches of rain for July, which is above average. This puts us nearly 16 inches rain above average for the year. Now, here we are at the beginning of August. What does Mother Nature have in store for us? Who knows. But one thing is for sure – now is the time to get our act together and prepare for the upcoming fall planting season. Read more from Doug | |

| Deadheading Plants will go to seed once their blooms are finished. That's nature. If left alone a flowering plant would bloom, that bloom would then be fertilized and set seed. In this reproductive cycle the plant expends all its energy and nutrients to set seed instead of producing more flowers. But a trick called “deadheading” will stop the plant from setting seed too soon. Remove the faded flowers from the plant by pinching off the flower head. Now the plant will spend its energy producing more flowers instead of seed! Deadheading will not only encourage many more flowers it will create a longer blooming period. Learn more | |
