Bearded Iris: Plant A Rainbow
Bonnie's Garden
I know fall is on the horizon when the bearded iris rhizomes arrive in the store.  We just got ours in so fall can’t be far behind.  There are Bearded Iris that are rebloomers that will bloom in the spring and, if conditions are to their liking, again in late summer/early fall.  If you have reblooming iris, then feed them lightly after they bloom the first time and keep them watered over the summer—remembering to dry out partially.  It’s easy to have a rainbow of spring color in your yard with bearded iris—and, as a bonus—deer don’t like them. Mind Your Peas-and, Grow Them, Too

Pollinators
Somewhere between 75% and 95% of all flowering plants on the earth need help with pollination – they need pollinators.  Birds, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, wasps, small mammals, and most  importantly, bees are pollinators. They visit flowers to drink nectar or feed off  of pollen and  transport pollen grains as they move from spot to spot. Learn more

Native Plants
Native plants are nature’s ideal source of food and protection for wildlife. The plants listed below are species and cultivars that have occurred naturally in the wild in our region. Because they are native to our area and have evolved in this climate and our soil they will generally require minimal fertilizer, no pest control and very little supplemental watering once established.  Look for our Native Logo on our signs in the nursery!  See our Native plant list

  Ramblin' through Dave's garden blog
An August wildlife update

If Tiger swallowtails are a bit scarce in this year's garden, hummingbirds are not, though typically only one is seen at a time, so taking a count is difficult. A tropical Firecracker plant (Cuphea) in a pot on the deck just outside the kitchen window is a hummingbird magnet, but I often see hummingbirds on the red flowered cannas beside the koi pond also.

Curiously, roughly equal numbers of Monarchs and swallowtails are now seen in the garden. Typically, swallowtails are numerous and Monarchs are not.

Again, there are white flannel moth caterpillars in the redbuds, though too few and too late in the season to be of concern. I do not spray to be rid of them, but last year there were none, for whatever reason. As I recall, this is a caterpillar with small spines that sting, so I will approach the redbuds carefully to avoid inflicting unnecessary pain.

August's Plant Highlight
Talking Gardening with Doug
Ornamental grasses are putting on quite a show here in August. Personally, there is one ornamental grass that is a standout above all other grasses. It is SCHIZACHYRIUM ‘STANDING OVATION’ or commonly called “Little Bluestem.” The name is very fitting for this grass because it does stand out amongst all other grasses.  Little Bluestem is a native cultivar to North America. It was discovered in Pennsylvania and is hardy from zones 3 to 8.  Here are some more interesting tidbits with Standing Ovation.

Fall Gardening
Bonnie's Garden
This time of year is a perfect time to think about your fall garden.  What are you going to do when the tomatoes, squash and green beans finally give their last?  Do you let your garden lie fallow over the winter or do you want to grow broccoli, peas, kale, etc.?  If you’re going to let those summer veggies chug along until the frost finally gets them, then yank them up and enjoy a well-deserved rest for the winter, then there are a couple of things to keep in mind.  Read more from Bonnie

Crape Myrtles
Crape Myrtles are chiefly known for their colorful long lasting flowers that bloom 60 to 90 days in the summer. Flowers are borne in summer and autumn in panicles of crinkled flowers with crape like texture. Colors vary from deep purple to red and white, with almost every shade in between.  Many of the new varieties were developed to be disease resistant and hardier for northern climates.  We have many colorful varieties in stock.  Learn more
