-Cold damage from temperatures below ten degrees is unlikely for daffodils, snowdrops, and other spring flowering bulbs that have foliage that has broken above ground. Opened flowers of daffodils can be injured by temperatures near zero, but it is nearly impossible to protect them.

- Damage from cold temperatures can often not be assessed until warmer weather. Damp soils going into our recent cold temperatures will be advantageous to plants, but some evergreens such as nandinas are likely to show signs of winter damage. Browned leaves are rarely a problem, and the cold that is forecast is not unusually severe.

- Cold damage is unlikely on most long established plants. Newly planted evergreens, particularly broadleafed evergreens such as hollies, are most susceptible to injury. Most plants in this area are rated as cold hardy to zone 7, which is a yearly low of zero degrees (Fahrenheit), and many common area plants are cold hardy to five and ten below zero.

- Heavy accumulations of snow or ice can be removed by gently nudging branches of trees and shrubs with a rake or broom. Avoid sharp blows that might cause injury. Only branches that are leaning under the weight of ice or snow should be cleaned, and if snow is expected to melt quickly there is no need to take any action.

- Winter flowering witch hazels, hellebores, and bulbs such as snowdrops are a highlight of the garden in January and February. To showcase these, piles of leaves should be removed from low growing plants.

Lifetime Warranty on trees and shrubs we install

Meadows Farms offers the only Lifetime Warranty on installed trees and shrubs in the area. Also, many pavers for patios and walks are covered by a 5 year warranty on materials and workmanship.

With extreme temperatures and droughts seemingly every year, the long term protection provided by Meadows Farms warranty is increasingly valuable in protecting your investment.

Fair weather

The assistant gardener is a fair weather sort, plagued by a variety of cold related irritations so that she's rarely outdoors below fifty degrees. As always, I'm out slip sliding in the garden in ice and snow, and now sinking into the quagmire, no matter the heat or cold, though a visit on a breezy afternoon last week was hurried through when the high was eighteen degrees.

Every day, there's something worthy of a stroll (or a shivering trot) through the garden, even if the something is to survey damage from last night's freeze. While I seldom miss a flower, I presume that the splendid winter blooms of various witch hazels are wasted on folks .....

February Gardening Checklist
Talking Gardening with Doug
Now that January has passed we are getting closer to spring. The first day of Spring is Wednesday, March 20, which is only 48 days away. I have no real complaints about winter so far this year.  We have had a more traditional winter with our highs and lows being closer to normal.  Let’s hope this trend continues.  February can be a transitional month from being cold and dreary to having warmer days that we see some shrubs, trees, and perennials beginning to come out of dormancy.  Because spring is here in less than 50 days, there are a few gardening chores that should be done during the month of February.

Indoor Citrus Trees
Bonnie's Garden
Growing citrus trees indoors is fun and easy.  I have a Meyer lemon, a key lime, and two kumquats in my spare room right now.  So here are a few interesting citrus tree facts.
