Garden Nuggets

- Damage from cold temperatures can often not be assessed until warmer weather. Fortunately, mild temperatures in recent weeks, and plenty of soil moisture should be advantageous to plants, but inevitably there will be some periods of cold. In some cases, cold injury will not be evident until new growth begins in late March and April.

- Cold damage is unlikely on most long established plants. Newly planted evergreens, particularly broadleafed evergreens such as hollies, are most susceptible to injury.

- Brown leaves remaining on some Japanese maples are not a problem. These will be shed before spring, and normal growth should resume. However, the leaves  can cause additional accumulation of snow or ice that can cause damage.

- Heavy accumulations of snow or ice can be removed by gently nudging branches of trees and shrubs with a rake or broom. Avoid sharp blows that might cause injury. Only branches that are leaning under the weight of ice or snow should be cleaned, and if snow is expected to melt quickly there is no need to take any action.

- Winter flowering hellebores and bulbs such as snowdrops are a highlight of the garden in January and February. To showcase these, piles of leaves should be removed.

Flowers in the snow. Why bother?

I suspect that few gardeners are out today, stomping through ten inches of snow, except to rescue arching branches of evergreens from permanent disfigurement. Today is not ideal for surveying flowers in the garden, though the sun pokes through occasionally and the day feels warmer than the thirty-five degrees (Fahrenheit) that the thermometer indicates.

Blooms of hellebores are showing just a bit of color in this garden, but now they are buried under inches of wet snow that will further delay opening of flowers if melting lingers more than a few days. Quite uncommon a decade ago, hellebores have become a standard for winter flowers, even if many do not bloom until very late in the season.

Tips for today's snow from Meadows Farms

Overnight snow

I am hearing of accumulations of five to eight inches of snow in the area, which is borderline, but just enough to cause concern for branches that are arching under the weight of the wet snow. Occasionally, snowfalls are accompanied by breezes that blow snow out of trees and shrubs, but today has been relatively still.

Certainly, there is no reason for panic, though I recommend a leisurely stroll through the garden armed with a leaf rake. I will caution to look up in wooded areas. In this garden there are numerous large dead branches suspended in tall maples and tulip poplars, balanced and waiting to fall. The weight of the snow is enough to bring them down, so I scan the forest canopy before walking through this part of the garden.

A Gardening Year In Review
In the Garden with Doug
The time right before New Year’s is often a time for reflection on the past year and the year ahead. It’s only fitting that my last blog of 2018 would be just that! We’re reflecting on the gardening season we had and offering our thoughts – it has certainly been an interesting gardening year with its fair share of challenges, and there is plenty to be excited about as we head into 2019.  Read more about the weather, looking back, and looking forward to 2019.

Gardening Resolutions -
How Did I Do?
Bonnie's Garden
I resolved to be better about feeding my garden during the growing season.  Fast-growing summer annuals and vegetables need to be fed but I usually get so bogged down in just trying to keep things watered and weeded in the heat, that I forget.  How did I do?  Better—but not great.  I did get an application down of Tomato-tone when I planted my summer veggies.  And I did get another application down around six weeks later.  But the plants, including herbs, I grow in pots, well, I didn’t do as well.  Read more from Bonnie

Winter Bird Feeding
Talking Gardening with Doug
Winter will be here, officially, in just a few days. Just imagine what it must be like for our feathered friends. How do they stay warm? Or, what do birds eat when the ground and shrubs are covered in snow?  Every year I get more attached to birding. So, between my love of gardening and now my love of birding, I seem to spend a lot of my free time outdoors with nature. I love it and wouldn’t trade it for the world. Read more

Christmas Tree Care
Because we buy so many Christmas trees, our growers cut our trees just prior to loading them on trucks for delivery to us.  This helps insure that we always have the freshest trees possible for our customers.  Some trees hold their needles longer than others, but it is more a matter of care and preservation measures after you get the tree home as to how long most trees can hold their needles. See our tips for caring for your fresh cut tree

Poinsettia Care
Poinsettias are the number one potted plant sold in the U. S.  This is amazing given the fact that they are mainly sold during the Christmas holiday season.  For the holidays, place the poinsettia in bright indirect light and allow the soil to dry moderately between thorough waterings. Learn more
We are surrounded by beautiful poinsettias right now so here are some interesting tidbits about them.
Watch our video on Poinsettia care

Paperwhites
I love paperwhites. They are easy to bloom—and fast! What’s more, they are inexpensive and beautiful.  When will paperwhites bloom?  Paperwhites started now will take around three to four weeks to bloom. I don’t usually try to get mine to bloom by a certain date; I just enjoy them whenever they bloom. If you do want to try to hit a target date, then I’d recommend planting two or three bowls about a week apart.  Learn more

Amaryllis
Amaryllis showed up a couple of weeks ago and I’m getting a lot of questions on how to grow these beautiful giants.  The good news is they’re a whole lot easier than you might think.  There are just a few things to keep in mind. In every grocery store these days, you can find amaryllis in boxes—a red, a white, a pink, and a red-and-white stripe.  If you need a grab-and-go quick gift, they’re great.  But if you are growing something for yourself or family or friends, look for just the bulb and plant it yourself. With amaryllis, the bigger the bulb for the variety, the more flowers you get—hands down.   Read more

Holiday Cactus
One of the plants you’ll see almost everywhere this time of year is Christmas/Thanksgiving/ Holiday cactus. So here are some interesting facts about these beautiful seasonal bloomers.  When they bloom in their native habitat in Brazil, they are beautiful spring bloomers that the locals call “Flor de Maia” or May Flower!

The Winter Solstice
Bonnie's Garden
One This Friday, December 21st, is the Winter Solstice—the shortest day of the year; the first official day of Winter; Yule.  The days, which have been getting shorter and shorter each day since the Summer Solstice, now will begin getting longer by a minute or two each day.  Many cultures around the world have celebrated the Winter Solstice.  Read more from Bonnie
