August Gardening Chores Talking Gardening with Doug  THE MONTH OF AUGUST CAN BE VIEWED AS THE “GATEWAY TO FALL” AND TO THE FALL PLANTING SEASON.  So, let’s recap July.  The only complaint I am hearing from homeowners and landscapers is with all the rainy days.  I can agree.  All this rain is leading to an increase in plants dying from root rot and all the fungal issues such as powdery mildew.  We had over 5 and a half inches of rain for July, which is above average.  This puts us nearly 16 inches rain above average for the year.    Now, here we are at the beginning of August.  What does Mother Nature have in store for us?  Who knows.  But one thing is for sure – now is the time to get our act together and prepare for the upcoming fall planting season.  Read more from Doug Deadheading Plants will go to seed once their blooms are finished. That's nature.  If left alone a flowering plant would bloom, that bloom would then be fertilized and set seed.  In this reproductive cycle the plant expends all its energy and nutrients to set seed instead of producing more flowers.  But a trick called “deadheading” will stop the plant from setting seed too soon. Remove the faded flowers from the plant by pinching off the flower head. Now the plant will spend its energy producing more flowers instead of seed! The native spurge is unexciting, but in recent years I’ve been inspired to cover every small area of open ground, with ordinary plants, or not, so I’m happy that Allegheny spurge has taken hold after a slow start.   It is not necessary that every plant in the garden makes one jump for joy. Some must do the dirty work, though the foliage of the spurge is pleasant enough and there will be a brief period when it flowers. Improvements to our Privacy Policy and Privacy Controls

DockDog competitions start this month!

May, 2018 DockDogs compete at the Wine Cave pond Bud Break - Growing Season Begins! One of the first signs of spring at Maggie Malick Wine Caves vineyard is bud break. That's when green leaf shoots emerge on the vine. This spring, bud break was a little late - just a few days behind the typical mid-April date. (Last year, it was two weeks early!) Moving earth Over the winter, Mark rented a 55,000-pound excavator and spent weeks clearing land at the foot of Short Hill Mountain, a location for possible future vine plantings. The land clearing also promotes air drainage in the existing vineyard. Cold air drainage in the spring and fall helps prevent damaging frost from forming on the vines. Air flow also is important for the grape vines during the growing season because it is critical in drying foliage and preventing fungal spores from settling on leaves, fruit and vines. Nothing goes to waste Mark excavated 15 tractor trailer loads of logs that became lumber you may have purchased at the local hardware store. Smaller branches are used at the vineyard property to fuel the fire pits at the Wine Cave during the cooler times of the year. The newly cleared area will be seeded with grass. The same area of the vineyards was farmed more than 100 years ago. But Mark unearthed a lot of rocks in the area. "I think whatever vines we might plant up there," Mark joked, "are going to have a lot of minerality!" Dog Days Chesapeake DockDogs hosts PuppyPalooza May 19 and 20 - the first competition of the 2018 season - at the Wine Cave. There will be plenty of dogs watching and participating in the competition. Maggie's refreshing Sangria and her award-winning wines will be flowing in the Cave throughout the weekend! Watch for Jet, Maggie and Mark's 18-month-old black lab, in the DockDog competitions this summer. Check Maggie's Dog Events page for other important summer practice and competition dates!
