| Garden nuggets - We invite you to visit Meadows Farms featured garden at the Capital Remodel and Garden Show at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly VA February 22-24. Our garden will feature thousands of flowers, natural stone walls, a pond, waterfall, and firepit, and much more. Stop by to say hello and to talk about plans for spring with our landscape designers. See our link for discounted tickets to the show. - Piles of leaves covering hellebores and winter flowering bulbs such as snowdrops should be removed so that flowers can be seen. Hellebore foliage is evergreen, but flowers are usually more visible if older leaves are removed. Winter flowers from bulbs, hellebores, Winter jasmine, and witch hazels are particularly appreciated when most of the garden is dormant. Adding winter flowering plants is a great addition to the garden. - Leaves of many hellebores turned brown after recent cold temperatures. Brown leaves can be pruned at any time, but care should be taken not to cut flowers. - It is best to hold off on planting until frozen ground is thawed. To be safe, we usually hold off until early March. The same is true for installation of patios and walkways that can heave through periods of freeze and thaw. - Damage from the recent cold temperatures can often not be assessed until warmer weather. In some cases, cold injury will not be evident until new growth begins in late March and April. Brown leaves do not certify that an evergreen is dead. After the recent cold spell we're seeing brown foliage on many nandinas. This is not unusual in average to cold winters. Brown leaves will drop in early spring, and new growth will follow in April. - Cold damage is unlikely on most long established plants. Newly planted evergreens, particularly broadleafed evergreens such as hollies, are most susceptible to injury. While this few weeks of cold is unusual, the nighttime lows were not extreme for our area, so most plants should survive without a problem. | |

Ramblin' through Dave's garden blog |
| Two Dianes and other witch hazels Curiously, two witch hazels (Hamamelis x intermedia), the red flowered 'Diane' and copper colored 'Jelena', flowered in mid-autumn, with no weather related cause that I could determine. I was, of course, concerned at the time that flowering then would mean no blooms in February, an unwelcome trade, though as it turned out, only branches on half or so of each shrub flowered early. Now, in mid-February, the other halves are flowering along their typical schedule, and though flowering is diminished, there are still sufficient flowers to fill the lower garden with scent on this mild winter afternoon ..... | |
