Garden Nuggets

- Cooler temperatures and more consistent soil moisture give excellent results when planting trees and shrubs in October and November. Lawns should be seeded as early as possible while soil temperatures are warm. Broadleaf evergreens such as hollies and laurels are best planted before regular freezing temperatures, which are rare before the start of December. Planting can be done in December, but the risk becomes greater if temperatures become unusually cold.

- Weeds in planting beds should be pulled when they are small so that seeds don't develop. Also, small weeds are often easier to pull, in particular when soils are damp.

October is the best time for planting spring bulbs such as daffodils, crocuses, and hyacinths, but planting can continue as long as the soil is not frozen. These are sturdy perennials bulbs that will return dependably every spring. Tulips are less dependable in our poorly drained clay soils. For best results these must be lifted, stored, and replanted each fall.

  Ramblin' through Dave's garden blog
After twenty-eight degrees

Following two nights of twenty-eight degrees (Fahrenheit), the garden was hurrying into winter dormancy until the process was interrupted by another inch of rain and a turn back to a week of milder temperatures. With abundant blooms remaining in late October, I now have a better idea where slightly protected microclimates are in the garden. Flowers of Encore azaleas are damaged in one area, barely in another, and not in the areas I supposed. I've guessed wrong so many times when planting tender plants in the past, so this is valuable information, though as is often the case, I am likely to forget before putting it to use.

Toad lilies (Tricyrtis) and other late bloomers have suffered little freeze damage, and only to foliage and not flowers. No sub freezing nights are forecast for the next week, so remaining flowers will be enjoyed another week, at least.

Planting Perennials in the Fall
The fall season is one of the best seasons for planting your perennials. By planting them now, you’re helping them to establish healthy root systems.  New perennials planted in the spring only have a short amount of time to prepare their root systems to survive the summer heat and drought. Their young root systems must not only deal with these harsh conditions but must also produce enough nutrients and water to support months of growth and flowering as well.  By planting your perennials in the fall instead, their root systems will have ample time to grow throughout the fall and winter months. Lichen-What to Do?
Talking Gardening with Doug
What to do about Lichen on my shrubs and trees?  First, in doing some research for this blog, I found writing this blog more educational for me than I originally thought it would be. Fall Mums
Chrysanthemums are a must-have for the fall garden. No other fall flower delivers as much color for as long and as reliably as good ol' mums. Mums liven up the fading fall garden with handsome flowers of nearly all shades and colors. Some varieties have daisy blooms; others may be rounded globes, flat, fringed, quill shape, or spoon shape. They work exceptionally well in container plantings and pots.  Learn more about mums

Tulips
Bonnie's Garden
In 1593, a Flemish botanist named Carolus Clusius was sent some tulip bulbs by a friend of his who was the Austrian ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. When Clusius accepted the position of curator at the botanical gardens in Leiden, Holland, he took his bulbs with him.  The first tulip to bloom in Holland bloomed in his private garden in 1594.  In the early part of the 1600s, Europe was coming out of the Dark Ages and people were fascinated by these strange new flowers and the demand began.  Read more from Bonnie
